Easy on the spicy mayo

Heinz withdraw Deli Mayo advert after gay kiss complaints

Easy on the spicy mayo

Tuesday, 24 June 2008

It’s all got a little too saucy for Heinz as they withdrew their ad campaign for Deli Mayo this week after 200 complaints were lodged with the Advertising Standards Authority. And the offending content? Not the garlic or the dodgy New York chef stereotypes but a full on kiss between two men.

Set in a family home at the beginning of a routine day, a New York deli chef is hard at work in his family kitchen. He exchanges lunch boxes full of Deli Mayo with two children who refer to him as “mum”. Then the hubby appears, complete briefcase and tie, and they exchange typical morning moments including sarnies and “see you tonight love”. The spice kicks in as “mum” responds to her husband platitudes with "Hey, ain't you forgetting something?” at which point the two men share a kiss. “Mum” then sends the father off with the words: "Love you. Straight home from work, sweet cheeks."

Commenting on the decision to remove an advert Heinz had intended to be seen as humorous, Nigel Dickie, director of corporate affairs for Heinz UK said "It is our policy to listen to consumers. We recognise that some consumers raised concerns over the content of the ad and this prompted our decision to withdraw it. ”

It appears the deli man you can have in your home is too saucy for British viewers tastes. Shame, we love a little kitchen action in the morning.

To boycott or to not boycott, that is the question. Whether it is nobler in the mind to go without baked beans and ketchup??

I love this advert, and I felt that the perception of gays and lesbians in the media and also public perceptions were begging to change. That they are withdrawing it highlights the narrow-minded, homophobic 200+ people out there with nothing else to do but complain!

We don't boycott an advert where a black man is kissing a white woman - so why this, why now?

The fact that 200 random complainers have the power to scare a company into thinking that their otherwise quite funny ad is "too gay" is amazing!

Heinz have no (meat) balls (in tomato sauce) and now have got egg (mayonnaise) all over their face - coming out of this all homophobic and without any of the sense of humour that their ad suggests they might have had.

Did anyone see the Wright Stuff (chat Show) with the mother who claimed she wasn't homophobic yet was digging herself a bigger whole and was eventually cut off cause she was sounding more and more homophobic with each word she spoke......

It is interesting though that so many people say "I don't mind" or "It doesn't bother me" when in fact they actually do and it does

I think It's a shame Heinz has taken this decision, it will do them no favours.

Why would we boycott an advert where a black man is kissing a white woman? I dont see a valid comparison.

There is a petition here http://www.petitiononline.com/heinz/petition.html to reinstate the advert

Heinz has a long history of producing gay themed advertisements. The two hundred complainers probably all went to church today. Wonder if they had ketchup with their dinners.
