It was a stroke of genius booking Silent Disco for the Fringe. It's not the first time it's been down to Brighton, previously winning an award for the most original night of the festival... and we can quite see why!
A nightclub without speakers is the rather bizarre concept. In addition - as if it needed another twist - there are two DJs and you can freely swap between them throughout the night with the flick of a switch on your headset.
We were a bit apprehensive of the whole experience to be honest, so we headed for the bar for a couple of drinks before heading on in. It turned out we had absolutely no reason to be!
Grabbing your headphones at the door (and handing over a fiver deposit) you enter a room that is - I guarantee - bound to put a smile on your face. Hundreds of people dancing, with their hands in the air singing half-remembered lyrics to songs. The bright orange headphones are your connection to this strange new world!
The headphones themselves have been custom produced for the Silent Disco team - and they're superb quality. You get all the bass you need and almost no loss of signal at all wherever you are in the club. The volume control means that you don't have to suffer the two days of ringing in your ears that is often the unhappy side effect of a night of clubbing, but it's the other little switch that is really innovative... your choice of music! Absolutely hate the track that the DJs just put on, or you can hear everyone singing along to another track that you love... flick the switch and adjust your dance steps accordingly! A little red or green light tells the world what tune you're listening to, so you can easily find other people to jump around with that are listening to the same DJ.
The whole experience is more than just a novelty. The DJs are very good indeed - one of them playing an eclectic mix up of pop, chart and occasional cheese and the other DJ providing a bit of a harder edged trance/club experience. Two DJs... one dancefloor! How very dare you!
If you thought putting on headphones would be isolating - I can assure you that quite the opposite is true. They bring everyone together in a way that never happens at a nightclub. With all of you sporting bright orange headphones you all look a wee bit daft - there's no room for being pretentious! And the best bit of all - if you want to chat to someone you just pull your headphones down and chat... without even having to raise your voice!
You'll find Silent Disco at the Fringe throughout May. I'll be the one on the stage with my hands in the air singing the wrong words to all my favourite tracks - see you there!
