Silent Disco Live: Dirty Pretty Things...
review Tonight, and over the next three nights, there's a chance to experience bands as you've never experienced them before! A live gig through headphones! Silent Disco DJ and superstar DJOD warmed the crowd up nicely - though it has to be said that most of the bemused audience didn't quite know if they were supposed to be dancing with their headphones on or chatting to friends waiting for the gig to start... both answers were of course correct! Turn up the volume if the DJ spins a tune you love, slip off the headphones if you want to chat or make a new friend! As well as being a great band, Dirty Pretty Things must be credited with bravery for playing Silent! The only part of the gig that felt like a regular gig was the first 10 seconds and the last 10 seconds... the crowd cheered as the band took to the stage, and DJOD announced to everyone, through the headphones and apparently over the radio in the Netherlands, that he'd be handing over to Dirty Pretty Things. After that... all that could be heard at the Concorde 2 was the crowd. The digital drumkit meant that even this wasn't audible unless you had the headphones on. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't absolutely bizarre to be standing 5 foot from the band and, with headphones momentarily removed, still being able to hear a conversation between two people three rows back talking about who's round it was! But bizarre in a brilliant way. With headphones back in place we were hearing the music exactly as the band wanted us to hear it. No distortions, no sweet spot in between the speakers, no bleeding eardrums. And Dirty Pretty Things were very, very good! So is this the future of gigs? Probably not... but is it the most fun you can have with your clothes on? Very possibly!
